Women’s Day 2022 – Lecture by Dr. Eleftheria Bernidaki-Aldous

For those of you who missed Dr. Eleftheria Bernidaki-Aldous’ lecture on March 8, 2022, here is a summary along with the link so that you can watch the entire lecture and share with family members and/or friends.

Women’s Day—March 8

Professor Eleftheria Bernidaki-Aldous spoke to AWOG members on ZOOM about the issues of disability and how to best facilitate our society to confront this issue. Right now, there is a lot of talk about inclusion but this can only become reality through legislation and co-ordination with society. There is always a gap between theory and practice – but Dr. Bernidaki is optimistic and sees that things are moving toward the law’s goal of inclusion.

Laws, she said, begin the practice. The European Union passed laws in 2007 and 2010 on inclusion. In Greece, a law was passed in 2012. By 2017 Greece was to implement directives coming out of a United Nations Convention. In 2021 Greece established the National Authority for Accessibility in work, travel entertainment, education, athletics, etc.

In earlier years, without the legislation we have now, it was the human factor that was the main force behind change. Dr. Bernidaki clearly showed how true this was in her own life and experiences. It was the thoughtful and forward-thinking people in her village in Crete, in her school years at Pierce, and in her further education in the United States who saw her potential despite her disability.

Dr. Bernidaki ended on a high note stating that we, as a society, can remove the obstacles that prevent the disabled from accessing their human rights. All it takes is removing ignorance through knowledge and information. Local governments must implement the existing laws for the disabled. And we must not forget that a disability may be acquired due to age or accident. No one is immune and, therefore, may need help in the future. It is our duty to establish a society where the disabled are afforded every opportunity to enjoy their rights as human beings.

The cloud recording of this lecture is now available for you to watch and share with others.

Thanksgiving Lunch

Thanksgiving Lunch

In keeping with the American celebration of Thanksgiving, AWOG members attend a traditional Thanksgiving lunch, usually held at one of the Athens hotels.  It is a time when friends gather to enjoy each other’s company while being grateful for everything we have.

Spring Fundraiser

Spring Fundraiser

Our principal annual fundraiser is the Christmas Bazaar, but often in the spring a second fundraiser is held.  This can take the form of a Vendors’ Bazaar or an official fundraiser such as a dinner dance, a cocktail party, or an event targeted for a specific charity.

Public Service Lectures

Public Service Lectures

Every autumn, AWOG organizes Public Service Lectures where specialized doctors discuss topics of general interest but also those of special relevance to women.

Topics such as Women’s Health – US Guidelines; Women and Heart Disease – Myths and Reality; Aging; Menopause; Bereavement and Passive Smoking from the Perspective of Human Rights are some of the topics which have been discussed in the past.  We have also hosted two anti-violence conferences which is a topic that continues to interest women around the world.

During the restrictions that were enforced during the Covid-19 pandemic, virtual lectures on health and well-being were held and were quite well “attended.”

General Assembly

General Assembly

According the AWOG Constitution, the Annual General Assembly meets within the first four (4) months of each calendar year on a date determined by the Board of Directors.  An invitation to the general assembly as well as the agenda are sent to all members in good standing before the meeting.

Every other year there is a second General Assembly (termed the Extraordinary General Assembly) in the fall at which elections are held for the new Board of Directors.

The General Assembly is the highest authority of the Organization whereby the will of the membership is expressed.  Members who cannot attend the General Assembly can “be present” and “vote” by proxy.

Christmas Bazaar

Christmas Bazaar

AWOG’S Annual Christmas Bazaar is a well-known tradition here in Athens with a long, rich history.  The 2020 CHRISTMAS BAZAAR marked the 52nd year of this event which was held online for the first time.  The 2021 CHRISTMAS BAZAAR–AWOG’s 53rd–was also held virtually.

As per our Constitution, one of our goals is to support non-profit institutions and we do this each and every year.  The Bazaar is the great unifier of AWOG because it is the one thing almost all of our members participate in.  As one year’s bazaar comes to an end, preparation for the following year’s bazaar immediately commences.

Some areas, like Glyfada,  Papagou/Holargos and Halandri, hold workshops; others work on sponsorships and letter writing, others on promotion.  However, everyone works together and comes together for this important event.  The amount of money we have donated throughout the years is surpassed only by the amount of love we have put into our work.
